The link belw is an exercise demonstration by Ms. Keli Roberts, one of the world's most talented and dedicated fitness professionals, about combination of body weight training and balance workout. The idea and choreograph can be a good hint for exercise instructors, I guess.

ACE resource

The link below is a useful tip for balance exercises. Balance is very important for athletes and fall prevention of elderly population as well. This exercise video is by American Council on Exercise, one of major fitness organizations in the industry.

For those who are interested in ACSM Exercise Physiologist cert, the link is a current exam content guideline as of March 2020. When I took this cert in 1995, the exam content was mainly centered on knowledge about risk factor stratification for cardiovascular disease and metobolic syndrome, implmentation of graded exercise test, metobolic calculation ... etc. And over 20 years have passed since then, current version of the exam emcompasses almost all of necessary knowldge and skills for fitness instructors and personal trainers, such as knowledge about strength & conditioning, olympic weight lifting, periodization, plyometrics, agility and reaction time drills, balance training, nutritional knowledge, exercise psychology, and so on in addition to the aforementioned topics. So to speak, the current version of this exam is a well rounded ideal one for advanced level fitness professionals.

ACSM、 ACSM, USA

The American College of Sports Medicine announced a staretgic partnership with the USA weightlifting. By this partnership, ACSM's know-how regarding strength training especially " quick lifting " will dramatically increased.

What is Exercise Physiologist ?

Four years have passed since the American College of Sports Medicine changed the name of their fitness instructor certification from " Health Fitness Specialist " to " Certified Exercise Physiologist ".  So to speak, history of this new profession is only 4 years as of 2019 and many people in the society don't know what exercise physiologist is.

Certified Exercise Physiologists are fitness instructors with a minimum bachelor's degree in exercise science, exercise physiology, or kinesiology. In other words, they are instructors or trainers with an aspect of as a researcher /investigator as well. You will be able to have an image of exercise physiologist's jobs and duties from these photos.

What I feel in my mind recently is ... I would like to pursue this new profession further. My current works are an exercise class for the elderly at a daycare facility, and exercise instruction for people with disabilities at a social welfare facility. Of course, these jobs also have an important meaning in the society and the community. But, what is lacking in my current everyday is an aspect as an investigator in health & fitness.  Some change or development in my work environment may be necessary in the future.

A formula for memorizing muscle groups in the shoulder rotator

Which exercise is contraindicated for persons with impingement syndrome of the shoulder rotator cuff muscles ?

This is one of discussion topics for a study group of ACSM certified Exercise Physiologist, which I retrieved from their internet site, and the following is my answer which I posted on their site. What I learned newly through this discussion is ... as you can see in my post, how to memorize names of muscles that constitute the shoulder rotator muscles. A key word for it is SITS, which is an acronym of the four muscles in the shoulder rotators,  1), Supraspinatus, 2) Infraspinatus, 3) Teres minor, and 4) Subscapularis.

1), Overview of the rotator cuff muscles and impingement syndrome.
The rotator cuff muscle group is most important in maintaining the humeral head in its proper position within the glenoid cavity. The acronym SITS may be used in learning the names of the supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor, and subscapularis. These muscles must possess not only adequate strength but also a significant amount of muscular endurance to ensure their proper functioning, particularly in repetitious overhead activities such as throwing, swimming, and pitching.
When these types of activities are conducted with poor technique, muscle fatigue, or inadequate warm-up and conditioning, the rotator cuff muscle group fails to stabilize the humeral head in the glenoid cavity, resulting in further rotator cuff problems such as tendinitis and rotator cuff impingement within the subacromial space (Floyd, 2012).

2), Contraindication and recommended exercises for the shoulder impingement syndrome.
Overhead pressing exercises such as shoulder press and all forms of bench press exercise should be used cautiously. The decline bench press stresses this area the least, therefore may be an appropriate exercise choice in reintroduction of the bench press.
The upright row should also be used with caution, as rowing too high (elbows up too high) may exacerbate the impingement type pain.
Clients who have had impingement syndrome should concentrate on continued rotator cuff and scapular exercises. Multiple types of rowing exercises targeting the rhomboids and middle and lower trapezius, especially focused on scapular retraction and depression, are recommended (Coburn & Malek, 2012).

Floyd, R.T. (2012). Manual of structural kinesiology, eighteenth edition. New York:NY. McGraw Hill.

Coburn, J. W., & Malek, M. H. (2012). NSCA's essentials of personal training, second edition. Champaign:IL. Human Kinetics.

S     supraspinatus  (棘上筋)
I     infraspinatus    (棘下筋)
T     teres minor      (小円筋)
S     subscapularis (肩甲下筋)
