bean throwing festival in japan Setsubun

Bean_throwing_festival

although two days have passed already
the day before yesterday Feburary 3rd was
'' Setsubun '' in japan
the word '' Setsubun '' means '' seasonal divide ''
as u know, japan has four distinct seasons, spring, summer, autumn, and winter
in ancient japanese traditional thought
it was believed that evil spirit comes out between each season
especially the transitional period between winter and spring
is called
'' Setsubun ''
and traditionaly, we japanese throw loasted soy beans in the house in order to ward off evil spirts on the day of Setsubun
cuz soy beans was one of precious protein sources in ancient japan
therefore it was regarded that soy beans have sacred power
and this custom of throwing soy beans on Feburary 3rd still remains
in current japanese society as well
and after throwing beans
if you eat same number of loasted soy beans as your age
it is believed that it draws fortune
if i follow this tradition, i have to eat over 40 soy beans ... haha
so, today i ate only 3 soy beans instead ...  (photo)
cuz i can't eat so much as my actual age ...  ahaha
